Getting started

Onboarding

Step-by-step setup for every type of Educator user — teachers setting up a class, school students joining their teacher, and independent learners starting on their own.

Teachers

Teachers create and manage classes, monitor class accuracy, run live sessions, and set homework. Everything is scoped to a subject — a teacher running both Food and History creates separate classes for each.

Step 1 — Create your account

Go to educator-labs.com/sign-up and sign up with your email address or Google. Select Teacher when asked who you are.

Step 2 — Create your school or join an existing one

The onboarding form asks whether your school is already on Educator:

New to Educator
Select No — I'll set it up. Enter your school name and optional region. You become the first teacher on the account and receive a school invite code to share with colleagues.
School already registered
Select Yes — I have a school invite code. Paste the 6-character code your Head of Department shared. You join the existing school account as a Teacher.

Step 3 — Create your first class

Still in the same onboarding flow, you set up your first class. You'll be asked for:

Subject
Choose from all live and Beta subjects — Food, History, Geography, Combined Science, Computer Science, RS, D&T, Business, PE Theory, Drama, and their KS3 counterparts.
Exam board
Select the board your students sit (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas/WJEC, CCEA). Cards are filtered to content on that board's spec. KS3 classes have no board picker.
Class name
Anything you like — most teachers use something like “10A Food” or “Y11 History”.
Year group
Y7–Y11, used for scheme-of-work pacing calculations.

Tier (Foundation / Higher / Both) is not set during class creation. It defaults to Both and can be changed any time from class settings after the class is created.

Step 4 — Share the class code with students

Once the class is created you'll see a class code (e.g. K7XM92). Share it with your students — display it on the board, paste it into your LMS, or share a direct invite link (which pre-fills the code for them). Students enter the code during their own sign-up to join the class instantly.

Step 5 — First session tips

  • Once students have completed a few sessions, check Class accuracy by topic on your class page. Each topic shows a colour-coded accuracy bar (green ≥80%, amber, red <50%) — red topics are where students need more reinforcement.
  • Run a live session for in-class use. Students join from their dashboard; you see a real-time leaderboard on the teacher screen. Great for starters or end-of-topic check-ins.
  • Use Homework to assign a specific topic with a due date. First completion automatically grants the student a streak freeze.
  • Click any student's name in the class roster to open their student detail page — mastery by topic, recent session history, and current streak.

Head of Department? HoD promotion is self-service. Once your school account is set up, an existing HoD can designate you as HoD for your subject from the School page. HoDs can view all classes across the department, access school-wide analytics, archive inactive classes, and see the school invite code — teachers can only see their own classes.

Students (school)

School students join Educator via a class code from their teacher. Their account is linked to the class and the subject their teacher has configured — no choices to make about board or tier.

1Get your class code (or invite link)

Your teacher will give you a 6-character class code — it looks something like K7XM92. They may also share a direct invite link that pre-fills the code for you.

2Sign up and choose Student

Go to educator-labs.com/sign-up. Sign in with Google or enter your email for a magic link. When asked who you are, select Student.

3Enter your name and date of birth

The onboarding form asks for your first name, last name, and date of birth. Your name appears on your trading card and the class leaderboard. Your date of birth is used as an age check — it is not shared with anyone. If you are under 13, you will be asked to have a parent or guardian create your account.

4Enter your class code

When asked “Are you joining a class?” select Yes — I have a join code and paste in your code. If you arrived via your teacher's invite link, the code is already filled in — just confirm it. This links your account to your class; the correct subject, board, and tier are set automatically.

5Start practising

You land on your dashboard. Hit Practice to start your first session. You can pick your avatar from your profile page whenever you like — avatars are not part of the sign-up flow.

  • Each correct answer earns 10 XP. XP unlocks avatars and advances your rank.
  • Complete a session every day to build a streak. Completing homework earns a streak freeze — protection for a day you miss. You also earn a freeze at every 7-day streak milestone, up to 5 in reserve.
  • Check the Learn page to read key facts for a topic before drilling — especially useful before a test.

Individual learners

No class code? No problem. Individual accounts give you access to the full Educator content library independently — ideal for self-studying students, home learners, or anyone who wants to practise outside of school.

1Sign up and choose Student

Go to educator-labs.com/sign-up and sign up. Select Student when asked who you are. You'll be asked for your first name, last name, and date of birth.

2Skip the class code and pick your subject

When asked “Are you joining a class?” select No — I'm studying on my own. You'll then choose which subject you want to start with. You can add more subjects at any time from the header once you're in.

3Pick a username

Choose a username — this is how you appear on the global leaderboard and league standings. It does not have to be your real name. 3–20 characters, letters and numbers only.

Set your exam board and tier

Board and tier are not set during sign-up — head to your profile settings after onboarding to choose your exam board (e.g. AQA, Edexcel, OCR) and tier (Foundation or Higher). Cards that don't apply to your selection will be hidden. If you're unsure, leave them at the default (all boards, both tiers) and you'll see the full card set.

Free vs Pro

Free
7-day full-access trial, then 5 sessions/day. All subjects, all card types, spaced repetition, XP and streak. Global leaderboard visible.
Pro — £50/yr or £6/mo
Unlimited sessions, unlimited streak freezes, all cosmetics unlocked, league tier system, and position-relative leaderboard framing.

4Upgrade to Pro (optional)

Click Go Pro from your dashboard or visit educator-labs.com/upgrade. Payment is via Stripe. You can cancel, switch billing intervals, or update your payment method at any time through the Customer Portal linked in your account settings.

Parent progress emails

Students can add a parent or guardian's email address from their profile page. The parent receives a double opt-in confirmation — no email is sent until they confirm. Once confirmed, they receive a weekly encouraging summary covering session count and current streak. The parent email can be removed at any time.

Leagues

Individual accounts (free and Pro) are part of the league system. Leagues have 25 standings from Iron IV to Champion, driven by your lifetime XP. Earn enough XP and you promote automatically at the end of a session — there's no relegation, so every tier you reach is yours to keep.
