Every design decision in Educator starts with one question: is this good for a 14-year-old who just sat down to study?

A session is a few minutes, not an hour. The goal is a habit that students actually form — and habits form when they feel achievable. Three minutes done daily beats an hour done once.
Students see their own improvement — cards mastered, streak kept, rank climbed. They never see how far behind they are or how far ahead another student is. Forward motion is the only signal.
No countdown timers. No 'you're about to lose your streak' guilt trips. No notifications telling a student someone overtook them. Educator never uses anxiety to drive engagement.
Leaderboards and class rankings are tools for teachers and classroom moments — they are never pushed at individual students outside that context. A student should never feel ranked without choosing to.
Every card attempted earns XP, not just the ones you get right. Students who are finding something hard still progress. Effort is the thing we reward.
Cards are written against the published spec and examiners' reports, then signed off by a qualified teacher in that subject before they reach a student. Nothing is crowd-sourced or AI-generated.
These are conscious decisions, not gaps. Each one is documented in our design guide so they stay out of the product as it grows.
Educator pairs engineering with classroom pedagogy. Our content lead is a qualified Design & Technology and Food teacher who signs off those corpora directly. For subjects outside her expertise — History, Geography, Combined Science, and the in-beta subjects — each corpus is reviewed and signed off by a qualified subject teacher before its homepage tile flips to Live. Nothing reaches a student until a teacher in that subject has checked it.
The principles above aren't aspirational copy. They're the design constraints we brought from the classroom: “the tool a head teacher can trust to be in front of their students every day.”
One school. Unlimited classes. No card limit. No teacher limit. If your students aren't practising daily by the end of the trial, you owe us nothing.
